Job Description

Position Description:

Perinatal/Reproductive Health Psychologist/Assistant Clinic Director

Department of Psychiatry

The Department of Psychiatry in the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa is seeking a Psychologist to join our clinical track faculty. The UI Department of Psychiatry is comprised of more than 90 full-time faculty members who provide national and global leadership across a range of psychiatric areas including child psychiatry, neuropsychiatry, eating disorders, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, medical psychiatry, community psychiatry, and perinatal mental health.

This appointment will be on the non-tenure clinical track, open rank. The position is a 1.0 FTE and consists of 75% clinical, 20% academic, and 5% leadership time.

This Psychologist will join a progressive and growing psychology division within the larger department and will be a member of the Women’s Wellness & Counseling Service (WWC) team. The WWC is the product of a unique collaboration between the Departments of Psychiatry and Obstetrics-Gynecology. Located at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics - Iowa’s premier academic medical center - the WWC has the unique distinction of being the only clinic in the state to provide comprehensive, specialized psychotherapy and medication management services in an outpatient care setting. We serve women across the reproductive spectrum with a focus on the perinatal period. In addition to cutting-edge clinical services, we provide high-quality education to clinicians and student-learners, and design research protocols that highlight the value of our clinical and training efforts.

The WWC is a multidisciplinary clinic committed to upholding optimal standards of inclusion and diversity in patient care. Our staff is anchored by perinatal psychologists and psychiatrists but also includes nurse practitioners, social workers, doctoral-level students, resident physicians, and medical students. Since its founding in 2007 the WWC has experienced tremendous growth which has resulted in the development of innovative initiatives including a Health Psychology program with the Center for Advanced Reproductive Care (hospital fertility clinic) and an Inpatient Antepartum Mental Health Care Clinic, as well as embedded mental health care in the OB-GYN Maternal Substance Abuse Disorders Clinic and Stead Family Children’s Hospital’s Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The primary foci of this position will be threefold: 1) the Psychologist will join the Center for Advanced Reproductive Care’s current Health Psychologist/WWC Clinic Director to provide fertility counseling and third-party reproduction consultations/evaluations, 2) the Psychologist will play an integral role in the implementation of a robust clinical research program with a reproductive health foundation, and 3) the Psychologist will serve in a leadership role as Assistant Clinic Director.

The Perinatal/Reproductive Health Psychologist will provide/engage in:

  • Diagnostic assessment and outpatient psychotherapy using evidence-based individual, couples, and (potentially) group therapy models

    • Care will be provided to those who are planning to conceive, coping with infertility, or suffering from perinatal loss, who are pregnant or postpartum, coping with PMS/PMDD or other OB-GYN medical concerns, or who are going through the menopausal transition

    • Treatment will include both in-person and telehealth care

  • Specialized care coordination with the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Division, offering consultation, fertility counseling, and third-party/surrogacy evaluations

  • Education, teaching, training, supervision, and consultation to medical students, doctoral students, physician residents, fellows, and other care providers

  • Clinical research that focuses on patient care or training initiatives

  • In collaboration with the Clinic Director the Psychologist will:

    • Engage in development of clinic didactic programming and outreach initiatives

    • Assist with day-to-day administrative operations including hiring and overseeing staff, running clinic meetings, managing use of facilities, and liaising with department leadership teams

    • Represent the WWC and Psychiatry Department by serving as a member of various community, state, and national collaboratives and service initiatives designed to advance maternal mental health
