Salary Range : Up to $80,000/Annualized, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

Essential Functions Job Summary Function: To provide subject matter expertise in the chemical safety programs within the UTSA Laboratory Safety Division. The Chemical Safety Manager will be expected to support existing laboratory safety programs and develop new programs in areas requiring improvement. The Chemical Safety Manager will provide guidance on safe chemical practices, risk assessments, control measures, PPE, chemical inventory practices, emergency procedures, and perform incident investigations. Emphasis will be given to high hazard chemicals to assess processed and procedures in the lab.
Scope: Responsible for operational coordination and implementation of laboratory safety policies, plans, and procedures for the safe use and control of chemicals, environmental concerns and hazardous waste control, at all UTSA campuses and owned or operated facilities.
Core Responsibilities Typical:
- Develop and maintains Chemical Safety/Hygiene Plan, Hazard Communication plan, and Workplace Chemical Protection Program detailing standard work practices and policies in laboratories. These responsibilities include periodic reviews and updates the plans as necessary.
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to promote chemical safety awareness, and compliance with chemical safety practices and regulations.
- Collaborate with laboratories to maintain accurate chemical inventories.
- Evaluate chemical risks in laboratories and develop standard operating procedures, primarily focusing on high hazard chemicals.
- Conduct laboratory evaluations, primarily focusing on high hazard chemistry and chemical engineering laboratories.
- Investigate chemical-related incidents, spills, or exposures and document incidents to include recommended preventative measures.
- Respond to emergency hazardous material spills and releases.
- Provide training as needed for chemical safety awareness, spill response, control measures, and PPE.
- Coordinate monthly chemical safety committee meetings, and collaborate with committee members on chemical safety concerns.
Periodic:
- Provide status or metric reports on chemical safety functions as required by Director of Laboratory Safety.
- Attend meetings and review plans related to the construction or renovation of laboratories, specifically laboratories with chemical use.
- Attend trainings or conferences to stay abreast of chemical safety regulations, and maintain certification(s).
- Respond to after-hour emergency spills or exposures.
- Ability to quench or stabilize reactive chemicals for safe transport and disposal.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications - Master's or Ph.D. in chemistry or chemical engineering.
- 8 years of experience in chemical laboratory operations, and/or chemical research.
- Working knowledge of laboratory safety and related environmental regulations
- Ability to tolerate laboratory environments and moderate exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, smoke, loud noises, and chemical substances.
- Ability to wear PPE such as respirator, protective suit, gloves, goggles, and footwear.
- Ability to operate multi-gas or single-gas detection meters, and provide analysis.
- Valid Class C Texas Driver's License to operate University vehicles or golf carts.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office software.
- Possess excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and ability to interact with a professional constituency and present to a group of people.
- Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others as well as work independently.
Preferred Qualifications - Professional Certification in applicable area(s): Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer (CCHO), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
- 40-hr HAZWOPER Initial Training.
- Chemical safety experience in higher education or research environments.

Working Conditions Working Environment:
- Laboratory environments and moderate exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, smoke, loud noises, chemical substances, hazardous chemical waste.
Physical Demands:
- Physical ability to sit, walk, kneel, bend, crawl and climb stairs and ladders.
- Use of specialized personal protective equipment and work in hazardous areas mandates participation in the UTSA Occupational Health Program.
- Will participate as a member of the UTSA Laboratory HAZMAT/spill clean-up team upon completion of specialized training.
This position will be primarily located
on campus . Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
