Job Description
The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) is the only nationally recognized interdisciplinary professional membership organization that represents the interests of the entire medical genetics team including clinical geneticists, clinical laboratory geneticists, and genetic counselors. Together, the ACMG and its members engage in coordinated efforts to improve patient care, ensure optimal reimbursement for genetic service providers, establish standards of care and laboratory policy, and educate members about advances important to their practices.
Job Description
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Communications and Public Relations develops short- and long-term comprehensive marketing communications plans, strategies, messaging and campaigns along with budget recommendations based on the College’s strategic goals, which will proactively advance the interests of the College.
25% Media/Press Relations/Public Relations
- Proactively plans and executes a full range of national press/media activities while building and maintaining relationships with the media to secure high-level media coverage for ACMG through news releases, feature/trend stories, interviews, etc.
- Manages the press outreach and coverage of the ACMG Annual Meeting including TV coverage, national and international media
- Represents ACMG to other high-level organizations such as NHGRI’s National DNA Day, the Smithsonian Genome Exhibit and others
- Anticipates and manages crisis communications
30% Member Communication
- As Managing Editor, is responsible for the overall planning, design, production and distribution of the College’s newsmagazine, The ACMG Medical Geneticist
- Serves as Editor of the monthly electronic member newsletter, ACMG in Action
- Write, edit and proof a broad range and large volume of communication materials for members and other audiences
- Develops, writes and oversees the production of a broad range of communications materials including writing and editing news releases, media materials, press kits, speeches, talking points and presentations
25% Strategic Communications and Marketing Campaigns
- As a senior staff member, works with the College President, Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer to translate the College’s strategic plan into effective communications strategies for a wide range of audiences
- Provides thought leadership, counsel and expert advice to ACMG leaders on a broad range of communications issues
- Creates and implements systems to provide ongoing qualitative and quantitative measurement for data-driven decision making and to measure success and reporting including marketing, media relations and social media
- Oversees comprehensive strategic and marketing communications campaigns for a broad range of ACMG products and services, positioning the College as the “go to” organization in medical genetics and creating a positive external perception
- Create international Medical Genetics Awareness Week campaign to celebrate the contributions of the entire medical genetics team to patient care and public health including social media, press relations, advertising, signage, graphics and other marketing initiatives
- Provides communications, media relations and social media counsel to the ACMG’s peer-reviewed journal, Genetics in Medicine , working closely with the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor
- Writes RFPs and negotiates contracts with vendors as necessary for communications projects
- Utilizes excellent organization and project management skills to manage multiple large scale, complex projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and staying within budget
15% Social Media
- Oversees the College’s extensive social media presence and strategies and program execution. Creates and upholds social media policies and acts as internal social media expert. Stays abreast of new and emerging social media platforms and recommends and implements new programs as appropriate. Tracks and analyzes social media effectiveness. Creates effective ways to engage audiences and builds followers and community
- Responsible for overseeing every aspect of our social media channels including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and Instagram to amplify ACMG’s voice and strengthen our reputation
5% ACMG Brand and Visual Communications
- Guides and enforces the consistent use of branding and messaging to ensure that all ACMG communication is of a consistent voice
- Ensures all communications uphold the College’s reputation including overseeing the development and implementation of the College’s branding strategies and creation of the ACMG Style Guide
- Provides internal communication expertise, counsel and support for internal departments’ communication and media relations need
- Hires and directs outside vendors including graphic designers, freelancer writers, printers and video producers to produce communication materials in a high-quality manner, on deadline and on budget
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Public Affairs, Marketing or Journalism is required
- Master’s Degree is strongly preferred
- Minimum of ten (10) years of experience managing communications strategy development in a nonprofit, hospital or medical society environment
- Background or relevant work experience in the medical, science, or genetics field strongly desired
- Enthusiasm for ACMG Foundation’s mission to “translate genes into health”
- Track record of successfully developing and executing integrated communications strategies for a nonprofit or medical society
- Experience with developing/executing digital and earned media campaign plans and content marketing plans
- Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
- Proven and skilled individual with the ability to effectively and efficiently solve problems and create new customer and team opportunities
- Possess a professional presence and strong work ethic and commitment to customer service
- Strong project management skills including the ability to organize and prioritize and handle multiple tasks to meet multiple competing deadlines and the ability to delegate projects to the team
- Ability to maintain productive and professional working relationships with team members, College leadership, planning committees, members, meeting attendees, exhibitors and sponsors
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube) is required
- Working knowledge of iMIS is preferred

ADA SPECIFICATIONS
This is a largely sedentary position that requires the ability to speak, hear, see, and lift small objects up to 20 lbs. Ability to travel domestically occasionally, up to 10%.
